I'm not personally in that camp, but you've definitely spotted a trend there.

Certainly the 328i delivers very respectable performance, segment leading indeed.

BMW has stated in the past that the trend is for even the less expensive cars (1 series, 3 series) to be optioned up with Nav, leather, etc. Buyer just become more accustomed to premium interior features, and don't mind trading some performance to gain creature comforts.
