Also what is BMW waiting for to switch to aluminum frames? Audi has been doing it since the late 90's and Jaguar has done it since the early 2000's. Some of these new BMWs like the 5 and 7 are porkers and can benefit from aluminum frames. BMW has experience with aluminum with the Z8 so i can only thing it's a money issue.
From what I understand BMW isn't using aluminum, because they are spending their resources on Carbon Fiber. This choice is smarter in the long run, because aluminum cars in this segment will be outdated the instant BMW rolls out the carbon fiber frames.
