Not sure if anyone ever answered this correctly or not. I only read the first few and the last few pages of the thread, but BMW refers to engine air filters as intake silencers. So what they mean in this instance is with the PPK you will get a performance air filter, kind of like a K&N drop in filter. That's all it is, the filter.
