As an E39 owner, I can confirm that the F30 I looked at today had subjectively same or more interior space and definitely more usable legroom. I don't think the trunk space will be as large (the sheet metal design is very different), but I could live with that.
By the way, seat and steering wheel adjustments in the F30 are absolutely insane. At the farthest position, my legs were almost completely straight (we're talking about 37" inseam here), and I could comfortably hold the steering wheel at the same time.
