I used to run an sq setup in my old e36. Nakamichi head unit, 2 ch amp powering some morel speakers in the front and a mono for a single 10 sub in the boot in a custom box.
The difference between running good speakers off the head and from an amp is night and day. Not just volume but crispness and clarity. I just finished a similar setup in a golf gti. A small amp to power the fronts really makes a huge difference. The rears are fine to run off the head.
