Goose'n a cold engine is never a good idea but there is a difference between a cold engine that was run six hours ago vs one run six weeks ago. Also a big difference between reving to four or five thousand RPM for a second vs hitting the rev limiter repeatedly or holding it there for any period of time. My guess is your problem is unrelated but don't let that friend behind the wheel again.
