I personally leave mine downstairs on the side in the kitchen, if they want it that badly they can have it, keeping my family as safe as possible is a priority not encouraging them to search the house for them.

I don't disagree with you. But if they break in while I am present and threaten me with a gun, then of course I will simply give it to them. My tactic is for when no one is at home. I doubt that all thiefs that break in to steal the key are armed. For a few that are, well as I said before, if they are determined to get hold of your car, you can't do much.
