I just put up a post about owning the E46 I've had for the last 12 yrs and how the cost of ownership wasn't anymore then the rest of my cars. BUT , that's because I do a lot of my own work. Even if you aren't mechanically inclined, you'd be surprised just how easy a lot of the so called "big ticket items" are to fix and how cheap it is to do. Brakes are one of the easiest jobs you can do and I'm talking the whole thing . Rotors ,pads and sensors. Its a job you can do in your driveway with minimal tools. & once you learn to do it once it,it pretty much will apply to all cars, with slight differences.
Sure there will be some things that you can't tackle alone and will have to go in for repairs, but with so many DIY's available on line you can't go wrong at least trying to fix things yourself.If you can manage to do a repair yourself , it will cost you, at most, a 1/3 of what the dealer will get you. Usually a lot less
