We've seen it hang on the BMW screen or the normal iPod display, which might match your experience (and my wife just told me this happened yesterday and replugging the cable did in fact help.) But we've also seen it go back to the "apple" logo and reboot itself.

USB cable from apple. Didn't take note of displays (in a case), but its either Te bmw combox logo or iPod menu
