I don't understand why people thought the 4 coupe would be something different other than a coupe version of the 3 sedan.
This is how it has been for a very long time.
The only reason BMW changed the naming convention was simply to differentiate the sedan from the coupe.
So, the sedan is a 3 and the coupe is a 4 series. That's it.

The coupe has always had a price premium over the sedan.
Why? I'm not positive, but one could say it's because due to economy of scale BMW sells a lot more sedans than coupes.
So if you want a couple you will pay a premium to get one.

Those who needed or wanted the 4 door will buy the 3, those who prefer the sportier look of the coupe now have that option.
If someone thought they would get more with the coupe over the sedan were misleading themselves, or looked too much into BMW's marketing.

In the final analysis there is nothing new here other than the coupe's use a higher number.
