The data exchange between the Phone and iDrive uses Bluetooth (MAP). You can use the USB connection for charging and other purposes but contacts, mail and texts is via Bluetooth

I have had a chance to test this yet but I suspect that it is not disabled while driving. The Read Out Loud feature will help you keep your eyes on the road while managing messages.
