If you have the time to sell it privately, maybe list it on something like autotrader, then you'd get a more money out of your car then trading it in. In my experience the dealer tries to use trade in to confuse you with the numbers and make you think your getting a good deal when your really not. Of course some people rather spend the extra money and save the hassle.
