The first number, ie 245, 255, is the tire width in mm. The second number, ie 40, 45, is the tire side wall height in percentage of tire width.
But as you mentioned 265/45 will be both wider and higher than 255/45. 265/40 will be wider but shorter than 255/45 for example.
265/40 wouldn't work since it has 9" wheel as lowest recommendation (lower tire profiles requires wider wheels for same tire width).
255/45-18 would be your best rear tire choice, and maybe upgrade the front tire to 245/45-18 on the 8" wide front wheel.
