the inverse (negative) trick is always the first thing people try but as you see it just looks solarized. Since you cut that mask, the next step should be to save the white paint as an alpha channel. Then go into that channel and make the mask selection again and hit auto curves to force a full range from black to white of the pain job. Next fill the masked car with pure black, load the alpha channel you just made, and apply highlights using white airbrush or adjusting curves. This will give you true highlights.
