I don't know the specifics of the agreement. I thought a sponsorship was you got the stuff for free in exchange for some type of marketing benefit. But, it's as simple as this. It has to with who has legal title and ownership of the item in question. If the kid never owned the property, he can't sell the property. That transaction selling the exhaust to the OP, wasn't valid.
And, OP should not contact the sponsor. The sponsor might ask for it back. OP did a value service outing this jackass and getting him banned. Unless he's sure the kid actually owned what he sold, he should probably lay low.
