Maybe it is because BMW has changed its vision to luxury and efficiency (As per BMW themselves) instead of the sportiness of their cars. The luxury/efficiency market has been around for a while, and is well maintained by Merc and Audi. The sportiness is what set BMW apart, and now, that lower priority gives them a lower percentage of the market.
I wish they'd go back to their sportier roots. A friend and I were just discussing last night how Mercs don't really do anything for us - they're nice and all bit there is nothing special about them. I fear BMW is headed in that direction.
