You enter VIN in "cargo ID" field and it will tell you if your car is on a boat, and the name of the boat.
Then go to: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/
And enter the name of the vessel your car is being shipped on for real time updates as to location of boat, speed, etc.
BMWUSA and 800 number still report my car is at port waiting on boat. In reality, my car made it on a boat last Friday and is currently approaching Southampton in the English Channel on a boat called Tristan, heading slowly buy surely to the Panama Canal, then to California, then to Tacoma, and then eventually to Alaska (probably when the 7th generation 3 series is introduced, at this rate!)
Hope this helps.

My vehicle on the Oberon just made it half way through the Panama Canal today: marinetraffic.com was not able to pick up AIS tracking signal from the North Sea until it reached Panama...
