Agreed. CVTs are not in keeping with the fundamentals of luxury cars. Instead of simulating gears, these transmissions should run through real gears with continuously variable ratios. The idea of one variable gear doesn't sit well with me.
That sounds like what the old AH (X6) and the GM 2 Mode Hybrid SUVs did. The motor-generators and engine are fed into a 4spd transmission that has a CVT at the end, so that during electric driving the CVT can act as an engine speed reducer... Reviews still panned it for being a slush box though at least in GM's implementation it was nearly a 50% improvement in city MPG.
