Well, they are going to need to do something to increase the stated HP of the base 3er in the U.S., at least for marketing if nothing else. While the N52 has about every advanced feature imaginable (valvetronic, variable cam timing on intake and exhaust, high compression, premium fuel, etc) it is amazingly rated at only 230hp, less than that of several other manufacturers (Ford, Honda, etc) whose engines are less sophisticated and run on regular gas. While no doubt BMW understates their engine outputs, the marketing guys cannot possibly like it. I saw in the press release that the new F10 base engine will be upped to 240hp, which still seems low, since as you say, BMW already has more powerful versions of this engine in existence (no R&D required). Seems like they could easily do at least a 250hp version which would maintain the separation for those wanting the N54 turbo motor.
