I was planning to purchase a y cable from ebay too (not wanting to pay £46 from bmw), however I instead went with a 8gb usb stick. I couldn't be bothered with faffing about with a y cable and plugging my iphone in/out all the time. I just leave the usb stick in all the time and have had no issues with it.
