I think you are forgetting how much bigger the 3GT is than the standard 3-series sedan. As an example, based on EU unladen weight(from BMW UK site), the 328 GT will be 55lb less than a 528i sedan.
328i: 3366lb
328 GT: 3674lb
528i: 3729lb
It is also only 2.7in shorter in length than a 5 sedan.
328i: 182.5in
328 GT: 190.4in
528i: 193.1in
To me it looks closer to a 5-series in driving dynamics than a 3-series.
