IIRC the European plates are attached to the car by adhesive and not bolted onto the car, correct me if I'm wrong. As far as leaving the plate off when the car arrives in the states; he said he can accommodate that request
Front ED plate is affixed with double-sided foam tape. Rear plate is screwed on (screws right through the plate) to the normal US mounting holes in the trunk lid. I know the dealers can't guarantee that the plates will still be there when the car is delivered. They must remain on the car when it's exported so you can't grab them yourself when you turn it in.
