For me I only seem able to view video files stored on the iPhone, not display other programs such as catchup tv or youtube. On the iDrive it simply displays a list of the video files similar to it does tracks for music.
Also from what I've seen the same functionality is available from a USB drive as the iPhone, I've not seen any difference in the way it displays videos.
