The warranty and the maintenance program are separate. Extending both will cost $ for both. Maintenance covers wear and tear items, warranty covers ... warranty items. haha.
I believe that most manufacturers cover the 4-6 years because if something has not failed in the first 4 years (original warranty), it is unlikely to fail in the next 2. You have to realize that corporations don't offer warranties to lose money. They will make money, and quite a bit of it. Insurance is just based on your level of risk tolerance. Some will do it and others could self-insure (put the $2-3k in the bank and if you don't need it at the end of the 6 years, more power to you)
