Hope you don't mind, I'm just not sure if your math is right...

With 8.5" et47 (400M), the centre of the wheel will be 13mm further IN compared to the 8" et 34 (397). With the additional 0.5" of the wheel, it will have extra 0.65mm on both inside AND outside. So the overall effect will just be 13mm - 6.5mm = 6.5mm, i.e., the 400M wheel will appear 6.5mm further IN compare to the 397 wheel.

Please correct if I am wrong.
