Primarily yes - to be able to rotate them... also to get more front end grip on turn-in
As to "sticking out" - an 8.5 ET35 only sticks out 5mm further than the stock front 8
In the rear an 8.5 ET35 would stick out 12mm further than the stock staggered 8.5 ET47 - so basically the inverse of what you're saying - the rears would stick out further than the fronts
