Why would I confuse adaptive headlights and cornering lights? Adaptive lights are just the xenons swiveling left or right depending on your speed and steering angle. The cornering light just comes on when you make a slow turn, when signaling at low speeds or stopped, and when Reverse gear is activated.

On the 335i Coupe I used to own, the inner corona ring would illuminate if I had a signal on and at a stop. In the X5 and this car, the corresponding fog light will. If you look behind the headlight housing, there's not even a bulb behind the center corona. The inner rings simply do not have bulbs.
