Brand strategy. It is always better be known as the company that under-promises and over-delivers than the the converse. Several other companies have employed this strategy in order to build a certain perception of their cars. Dodge did it with the original SRT-4. It resulted in a lot of glowing remarks in the press. VW did it to some degree with the introduction of the 1.8T way back when. I'm sure there are a ton of other examples.
