BMW released information regarding the July production changes as follows:
Starting as of July 2012 production, the next generation Navigation Professional system (609) will be available on the 5 Series Sedan, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series Sedan and ActiveHybrid 3.
The "current generation" Nav Professional System is what has been in use in the E9x since MY 2008.
● For the 2013 328i & 335i Sedan, BMW still uses the "current generation" Nav Professional System.
● For the 2013 ActiveHybrid 3 Sedan, BMW will use the "next generation" Nav Professional System.
Both of these models are in the same series, class, and roll off the same production line. I personally find the situation to be absurd, given the $3,100 price tag.
(Yes, I understand, technology changes, things upgrade over time, but the same line, same car, unacceptable. Just my opinion.)
This is somewhat minor for people who aren't very tech oriented with their BMWs, as it is more of a performance upgrade/visual update (faster processor, higher resolution, updated maps, etc.) But if you're a techie and can pinpoint and articulate these differences, it's quite a b!tch to be without said update.
Specifically,
Intel processor 1.3Ghz vs Renesas 600Mhz
1Gb RAM vs 512Mb
8Gb flash vs 512Mb
Nvidia graphics vs Fujitsu
200Gb harddisk vs 80Gb
New system has wireless chip inside. That opens up new possibilities.
From a tech standpoint, this is a very substantial, major upgrade.
