+1. It's better for the car to assume that there's an idiot at the wheel who doesn't know enough to fasten the seat belt and drive with the doors closed.
I always back my car into my tiny vintage 1938 garage. I have foam glued to the driver's side wall to protect the door when I open it too far, and to show me when the car is backed in enough to allow the garage door to close. I have to back up with the door open to accurately gauge when I'm in the right spot. So long as my foot is on the brake and I'm not too close to wall on the passenger side no problem, but if I am too far over it will go into park, forcing me to pull out and try again. It's a slight inconvenience, but not as inconvenient as having to fix a paint scrape.
