USB sticks work fine in the glove box USB port.
If you want to load music onto the HD, you have to do it through the USB port in the glove box. The USB in the armrest is for playback only.
Media -> Options -> Music data import/export -> Import music (USB)
I've done it lots of times. It can take a while (30-60 seconds) after you plug the USB stick in before the car will recognize it being there.
