I wouldn't equate a tire or performance cosmetic pieces with a fuel pump like the OP.

Had the same thing happen with the steering angle sensor on an R171 SLK in '04. Also, having worked in dealerships for 13yrs, I could list plenty of examples where this is done.
Also, a fuel pump is as much a "performance" related issue as a tire.
