You may be right.
When MB introduced the CLA it was strange that the only answer BMW had was a stripped 3 Series. Didn't make sense that a multi-billion dollar car company would get trumped like that, appear to be caught with its pants down. Perhaps the F30 loses the 35i and 28i options, goes 20i only, and stabilizes as a car that maxes out at $35,000. Boom, there's your CLA combatant.
Meanwhile, the 4 GC becomes the upscale version of the old 3 Series, carries on the legacy of performance and luxury, all is well again in the BMW world.
