If you compress the spring so that it is in the exhaust-flap side groove and laying on top of the motor pin (sorry not sure what to call it) - so basically the only thing you are missing is the two to line up - it will be off by what seems like the diameter of the spring or so, very little - then start car. I suppose there is a small movement or the motor is stopped out of place, not sure but starting the car, immediately I could hear the spring snap into place as I'm assuming the motor turned. Not sure how lucky I got but it wasn't that hard to compress the spring up there if you have pliers and are gentle.
