It's different than that. This is electrical power steering assist, not fly by wire. The steering wheel is still mechanically connected to the rack through the column and is what is actually doing the work with an electric motor to help lighten the load.

Fly by wire has no mechanical connection to the part the control is telling to move. It provides an electric signal that is then interpreted by the system and control motors do the actual movement.

Something to think about with this system though is depending on what computer controls the assist you could potentially adjust the amount of assist or turn it off all together at speeds greater than 15MPH with a reflash.
