That's how the F10 is. It's not high-voltage or anything, and normally capped off anyway.

So did my 2001 BMW X5. It's not progress, just changes in design.

The cupholders in the E90 (and E60) were the worst part of the car. If your Starbucks cup was empty, they might fling it into the back seat if the spring-loaded mechanism got hold of your cup the wrong way. And, have you ever seen the cupholder design in an E63? Comically designed as an afterthought:
