I don't see it this way at all. With the electronic automatic transmission, you need to have a manual parking brake. If the battery dies and you have to move the car, you have to manually (underneath the car ) shift the car into neutral. If this happens, the electric parking brake would not work and you couldn't keep the car from rolling. The manual parking brake would be necessary to hold the car. This is how I look at it from a mechanics/engineers perspective.
