A long time ago, a friend of mine had an E46. His rear view mirror had the same drooping problem we're talking about now. The mirror fitment became increasingly looser as a consequence of his constant fiddling with it.

Eventually, the mirror was so loose that it was just basically dangling/flopping around. He was trying to adjust it one day to no avail (too floppy) when suddenly, he decided to just rip the mirror off and throw it in the backseat.

To this day that is one of the funniest things I've seen a BMW owner do whilst driving.
