About 60% of the cars in Belgium are diesels. In the '70, '80 and '90, diesel was significantly cheaper than petrol, but nowadays the difference is minimal:
Petrol price: 1.77 euro/liter or 8.73 US dollar / gallon
Diesel price: 1.50 euro/liter or 7.40 US dollar / gallon
PS. in Holland:
- a barebone BMW F30 328i automatic starts at 45502 euro = 59275 US dollar
- a barebone BMW F30 335i automatic starts at 54781 euro = 71363 US dollar

Here you can get a 328i for cheap, but if you get into an accident -> ER -> surgery -> bankruptcy. That wouldn't not happen in Belgium
