Difference is who they're marketing to (the demanding performance car driver vs. everyone with a semi-decent paying job that want the status), and if they're letting money cloud judgement on what is a good car or not from an engineering standpoint. Its when they made money their PRIMARY goal that they shot themselves in the foot, at least among enthusiasts.

Without this judgement, all cars are for the same function - some are more expensive than others for no reason then.

Same arbitrary value as buying name brand clothes vs. stuff from your local Kohl's.

The difference in cost used to be for the performance you were getting. Now it's all about riding the old curtails and using the BMW name as a status symbol.
Your points are valid but some of it is bound to happen when a company grows beyond a certain size. It's marketing its products to many more people than the original enthusiast base. The decontenting is infuriating though, and most mfrs are guilty of it. Bean counters at work.
