The Gilette approach

Having seen the news that the LR Evoke is to get a 9 speed gearbox from 2014 it made me wonder where it will end up! 4 speed manual the norm for many years until 6 speed box, then the 7 speed particularly within new dual clutch or auto boxes in mainstream production cars, the 8 speed auto in the BMW and now 9 speed.

I am looking forward very much to the 8AT but I am concerned that reliability may suffer and there will be much more (expensive) maintenance required due to increased complexity and number of shifts. Or, conversely is there actually less strain on the gearbox due to the number of shifts?

Looking forward to my 26AT flying car in 20 years!
