You might just be Jim, for starters do you really even know what the net effect of that is? Not talking about how different they look, but why one vs the other?
1. For st your E9x does not have enough suspension travel to really make an appreciatble difference. The wishbone allows large verticle movements without a change to the camber of the wheel. The travel arc means that the contact path will change somewhat though as the wheel moves up or down. - you loose almost nothing.
2. Wishbone means a lower hood is archievable, but seeing as to the minimum hood height laws have changed and a higher hoodline is mandated, thanks to improved pedestrian safety, this was done probably for the extra space in leads to in hood. If you want a V engine, more space is good. Your E9X will not have any Vs in the range. - you loose nothing.
3. Wishbone is costs more to manufacture and more joints mean the subframe costs more too. - You gain in the cost department staying with struts

In the final analysis, its much to do about nothing really. New not necessarily better. Wishbone not superior, just different and better for cars with V8s in their lineup.
