It's the cool-face knob.

In its simplest form, during winter you keep this on 'red' to have the four chest-height vents blow heated air at you for maximum warmth. But if you need some fresh, cool air on your face occasionally you twist the knob to 'blue' and this takes the cold outdoor air, bypasses the heating coils, and cools your upper body immediately while still maintaining warmth at your feet and lower body.

If you get sleepy on a cold night's drive, it's like taking a cold shower. If the wife complains about cold feet while you're sweating to death in your 700 fill North Face Down Jacket, it's a great compromise.

During summer, leave it on blue 24/7 or it screws up the air conditioning.
