That's a good way to go too, but you might want to put it in a soft case to prevent shocks to the HD while driving.
I have a 16GB iPod nano that I use for podcasts and stuff; it works great plugged in via the standard apple cable and it doesn't have any moving parts. As you say, I get album art, etc that way too.
