I'm not sure what your friend is talking about...but I can say w/ confidence I've never heard of this being necessary on any car...Hell I had a 1979 Ford that had a bit of cloth on all the bits that contacted the window, as to not cause damage.
seems like i need it though....the rear is already creating lines on my non-tinted windows...plus its only $30 and i will install myself. then when i give the car back i can say look no lines on the windows too! haha
