I can confirm that embedded artwork (inside mp3) works with a usb flash drive (I'm using sandisk cruzer fit 32GB).
I have the technology package though on my f30.
A quirk though: Some of the songs did not display artwork in spite of embedding the jpg inside the mp3 file. I noticed that the size of the jpeg was pretty big (1900x1900 pixels). I reduced the size of the image and retried. It worked but again not for all files.
Finally, I tried another free software (instead of iTunes) called mp3tag and re embedded the artwork into all those mp3 files using mp3tag. This time each and every song displayed the artwork.
So, if album artwork is not working for you, it might help to reduce image size and try mp3tag.
