Prices can be significantly different in other countries. Here in Belgium, a barebone F30 320d costs 34450 euro = 44878 US dollar. Mine ended up costing 52000 euro = 67740 US dollar, because of the options! (parking sensors, Xenon lights, automatic gearbox, rain and light sensors, back camera, heads-up display, stop&go cruise control, ...)
It needs about 5 liter/100 km, which is 47 mpg.
About 60% of the cars in Belgium are diesels. In the '70, '80 and '90, diesel was significantly cheaper than petrol, but nowadays the difference is minimal:
Petrol price: 1.77 euro/liter or 8.73 US dollar / gallon
Diesel price: 1.50 euro/liter or 7.40 US dollar / gallon
