Half the issue with cars in the blind spot is when they are approaching rapidly. Even if they are 4 car lengths back when one starts to change lanes, they might be much closer very soon.
Even if I drive like speed racer, if I am trying to merge out of the slow lane, I may need to consider approaching cars at a distance, and need to watch the cars in front and behind me while calibrating the lane change.
A bit conservative is not necessarily bad - the vibration is easy to ignore.
