Yes, purpose built sports cars can do it. So it's impressive that a 3-series can do it, too.
As for the comment regarding engine size: there are E34 M5s, E36 M3s, Toyota Supras, Nissan GT-Rs, and 911 Turbos with well over 1,000hp - all with 6 cylinders.
