I had this issue on my 1 series with VSS and adaptive.
Replaced the steering rack - noise gone......until about 1000 miles later when it was back to square 1.
BMW said it was normal although couldn't pin point the issue?
have learnt to live with it since.....hope my new 335 doesn't do the same
